I was working on an original document. I replaced variables with IDB and (gasp) saved the document. Can I recover the original version?

(A) If you have a backup service, it likely has the unaltered version in its storage.

(B) You can use the Reverse button in the Power Tools section of the Instant Database screen.

  1. Recall the document to the editing screen.
  2. Display Instant Database (Alt-D) and recall the record used on the document. So, if John Doe is present in the document where [Client Name] used to be, it is probably the John Doe record.
  3. Click the red Power Tools button.
  4. Click  the Reverse button toward the lower left.

Here's what will happen:

The value ("John Doe") moves into the Variable column and the variable ("[Client Name]") moves to the Replacement Value column, the value ("Jane Doe") moves into the Variable column and the variable ("[Spouse Name]") moves to the Replacement Value column, etc., all the way down the screen.

Click Next>>. Every instance of John Doe in the document is replaced with [Client Name], every instance of Jane Doe is replaced by [Spouse Name], and so forth until all 'variables' are processed.

The reversal may not be perfect. For example if Mary Doe is both [Spouse] and [Personal Representative], with the reversal, Mary Doe will be replaced with the first variable encountered. This is addressed by reviewing and correcting the document.
