I have a new computer and want to move Pathagoras onto it. What do I need to know?

Q. I have a new computer (or otherwise am changing computers). I have three questions for you:

1. Can I transfer my license from one computer to the other?

Yes. Just run the last full version of Pathagoras Setup.exe that you received from Pathagoras on the new computer. (Don't install any beta versions you may have tested--the beta versions don't contain the licensing information needed to effect a complete installation). Please uninstall Pathagoras from the old computer so as to not violate your licensing terms.

2. What files should I transfer to restore as much of my old system as possible to my new system?

a. If you store your form documents 'locally' (i.e., on your c:\ or other drive on the 'old' computer), it is a 'best practice'  to transfer those form documents into the same relative location on your new computer. If you you are cleaning house and changing locations and references to your form documents, then make sure that you repoint the books in your various libraries and DropDown Lists to the new locations. (This is not hard. It merely increases the number of steps you need to make the conversion complete.)

b. If your source text is stored on your network server or in the cloud, the above step can be ignored. However, if you change the way you refer to your network drive ('z:\' instead of 'n:\', or '\\network drive' instead of 'q:\'), make sure that you repoint the books in your various libraries and DropDown Lists to the new locations.

b. Copy the entire contents of the old 'Pathagoras' folder to the new system. This folder contains the administrative files needed to run Pathagoras. Use this chart to help in the copy routine. The left column indicates where the files are currently on your 'old' machine. The right column indicates where you need to move them onto your new computer. The location depends upon the operating system (32 bit vs. 64 bit) of the old and new computers:

Old O/S
New O/S
 32 bit: c:\program files\Pathagoras  64 bit: c:\program files (x86)\Pathagoras
 64 bit: c:\program files (x86)\Pathagoras  64 bit: c:\program files (x86)\Pathagoras

By transferring these files, you will pick up your Profiles, your Libraries and Books and your DropDown Lists.

c.  Some settings, especially network pointers are stored in your registry. For example, if you have been storing your Instant Database records on your network, you will have to repoint Pathagoras IDB pointer to that location. The steps are outlined at this link.

NOTE: Pathagoras was very flexible when you set it up originally, letting you keep documents and data in locations you desired, not places that we mandated.  So, when making a move to a new computer, be sensitive to where things 'used to be in the old setup' when things don't quite work correctly when first using the new setup.
