Can Pathagoras 'ignore' a [variable]?

Q. Is there a way to have the program overlook bracketed phrases that I do not want to replace with a value.

E.g., I want the following bracketed text 'Reserved'to remain in my document after I personalize it via the Instant Database:

2.1 Text text text

2.1 [Reserved]

A. Being a ‘plain text’ processor, Pathagoras cannot distinguish one bracket from another. So without more, you cannot tell Pathagoras to ignore [Reserved]. But here are a few options on how you might handle this:

  1. Change the bracket to something else. E.g.,  “2.3 (Reserved)”  This change of 'bracket' to parenthesis will in most cases serve the same purpose without injecting confusion.
  2. Just don’t do anything with the variable when it appears in the Instant Database Screen. When you ‘replace’ variables, nothing changes when the value is empty.
  3. Change Pathagoras’ boundary marker from '[' and ']'  to something else. That is a major change, but it can be done.
  4. Set an ‘ignore’ marker. Pathagoras will ignore any variables that start with the ignore marker. So if you set the 'ignore' marker to "_", then '[_Reserved]' will be ignored. Admittedly that looks a bit funky, so if you need to ‘balance’ the markers for appearance sake, '[_Reserved_]' will work too.

To set the ignore marker, click the Power Tools button in the IDB screen. Then click More Tools. Click the Other Settings/Actions tab (below)
